Kevin Allen: New York Rangers can rule trade market with $6 million in cap space Bruins could be favorites for Klingberg, unless their focus is on Chychrun.

I see you can write about NHL hockey for years and still not understand that the cap is based on daily accrual.

Pretty tough to choke when the team is playing above everyone's expectations

Can someone please explain to me the shine on Chiarot? He's a mediocre 2nd pairing dman who punched above his weight class for a hot minute in the cup run. He's barely worth a 3rd IMO.

Evander Kane to the Rags with the Sharks picking up half his salary & they will still have change from their nickel

He said the cap info came from capfriendly.com. They are pretty accurate!

Kane doesn't fit long term and his contract is practically voided now anyway. They could sign him for free eventually if they wanted, hopefully not. Teams are still waiting to see if he will be suspended for his most recent conduct.

Preds have more cap space and could be the ones that grab the brass ring!

Yeah, people would be stupid to sleep on them. It's so weird to think that with those terrible contracts they actually have room to maneuver.

As a Habs fan who thought signing him was a poor choice, I can say he is almost certainly exactly what contending teams want right now. He’s big, physical, a surprisingly decent skater considering his playing style, a decent puck mover, and when he wants to, he has a little offensive jam too - primarily from a solid rebound-creating point shot.

Is he amazing? No.

If you already have a solid defense though, like most contenders do, sliding Chiarot in next to a less physical PMD type is a no-brainer. Montreal reached the Final last year with Chiarot leading the team in ice time. He didn’t seem better than usual during that time; he demonstrated that he plays “playoff hockey” extremely well.

My biggest concern if I was a buying team is whether Chiarot can acclimate himself into a new team’s structure in time for the playoffs. He was pretty terrible for much of his first year in Montreal.

Thanks for the input. I've done some deep dives into his analytics and they're honestly a disaster and while I don't watch a ton of MTL games, from the eye test I can verify some of what you're saying, but I don't think any of that is a worth a 1st, let alone a 1st plus more assets.

I'm also just curious to see how this market pans out. Because of how things are panning out in the West it looks like there may be less sellers, so I don't know if that will give leverage to buyers with less teams bidding.

Adding both Hertl and either Chiarot/Klingberg would be a huge add for the NYR. Hertl alone, the way he is playing, would be downright scary. Id trade Strome, Kratsov and a 1st. But the 1st would be a conditional pick on whether he resigns or not.

And he couldn’t even read the appropriate number on their site. Who gives a poop about cap space now. What’s the cap space come deadline day. That’s what matters.

I don't think the Rangers need any help on D, maybe a #7 depth guy. IMO where the Rangers need help is bottom-six depth and maybe an upgrade at 3C.

NYR spending assets for rentals would be amazing. They are fake contenders.

CC should be a rangers target. Argubaly one of the best players who may be made available.
